STUDENTS SET BUILDING AND VEHICLES ON FIRE

THE situation is tense at the Westville campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal South Africa.
This is after students set a risk management building and three vehicles alight
.
They blockaded the main gate and everything came to a standstill yesterday morning.

When Daily Sun arrived at the gate, security guards were turning away cars and students.
Student Representative Council secretary, Ngcebo Mazibuko, said: “You must understand that people react in many ways when they are angry but I don’t encourage anyone to vandalise university property. There are a number of issues we are not happy about, such as the closure of the registration appeals committee which helped students who owe the university.”
Lesiba Seshoka, the institution spokesman, said: “The university is committed to engaging with students to understand the causes of the unrest and address them. At the moment such issues have not yet been brought to our attention. In the meantime, academic activities will continue at all the other campuses of the university.” Colonel Jay Naicker said Westville Police Station is investigating a case of malicious damage to property and public violence.
